WhatsApp Introduces New Voice Calling Feature – A New Problem for Skype, WeChat and Viber

WhatsApp free voice calling feature is finally here! Yes, you’ll now be able to make free calls from your WhatsApp application to the other users of the app.

While the users of WhatsApp have been demanding this feature for quite some time now, it has taken the purchase of Facebook to get WhatsApp to realize the importance of adding a free voice calling feature to this already amazing messaging platform.

A few months ago, rumors about this feature started surfacing and now these rumors are gone, the real feature is happening and it is finally becoming a reality. WhatsApp has more than a dozen competitors in the instant messaging niche. Surprisingly, most of its competitors have had this feature incorporated to their platforms and they have been offering users with free calling services for quite some time now, yet when you compare the figures of WhatsApp against each of Viber, Line, WeChat and Tango, none of them is near WhatsApp when popularity is at stake.

Delays in launching WhatsApp free calling feature caused by technical problems
WhatsApp started coming up with this calling feature some months ago and they have been working on it for a while now. Towards the end of last year, WhatsApp CEO announced that the free voice calling feature will be out by January and it seems WhatsApp has really tried much in meeting its deadline. The delays in the release of this feature were attributed to technical problems, for instance, the app needed to access all microphones on phones in order to work around the noise cancellation aspect of calls.

Another reason as to why this feature delayed was due to the fact that WhatsApp is used largely by people in emerging economies, where most people make use of 2G connections and as such, the company was working on ways to ensure that the feature works well even in such conditions.

WhatsApp Web to offer call options
WhatsApp is releasing this free voice calling feature following the launch of a new WhatsApp Web client for PCs and using this client, users of WhatsApp can read and respond to their messages directly from a desktop. In actual sense, this new client simply mirrors what WhatsApp does to your PC and as such, users of this client should expect to also make calls from their PCs.

Even though this is just still a rumor, a lot can be expected from this new web client, especially with it coming in with a number of restrictions that include lack of support for the iOS devices as well as limited support of web browsers, where Chrome is the only supported browser.

Android users can get the latest version with a ‘Calls’ window by downloading the latest version of WhatsApp 2.11.508 directly from the official WhatsApp website and side-loading it to their Android devices. Users will also be able to send text messages while still on calls, although nothing has been confirmed whether WhatsApp will include a video call feature to its platform immediately.

Even though WhatsApp has not confirmed any of this news just yet, there are very strong reasons to believe that this feature will be fully operational by the end of May 2015. Keep following us and we’ll keep you updated.
