With consumers increasingly placing more of their most personal
information on their smartphones, interest in mobile security software
has risen, at least among Android users.
Among those seeing the biggest boost from the trend is Chinese app maker
Cheetah Mobile, which saw two of its utility apps crack the top 10 in
Google Play downloads in December, according to App Annie.
Cheetah Mobile has said it has 340 million active users for its app portfolio, and the company, whichwent public last year, has focused on free apps to fuel its growth.
Meanwhile, security software company AVG, which has been seeing strong
downloads over the past year, saw its app climb up the revenue charts,
thanks in part to a 40 percent discount on its paid pro product.
The interest comes as Android malware is on the rise. Lookout, another big player in mobile security, said Android malware in the U.S. rose 75 percent last year.
Also posting a notable climb was Mobile Motion’s Dubsmash app, which
lets users offer their own renditions of various pop songs. On the
iPhone side, the app was especially popular in France and the Untied
Kingdom, while both iOS and Android versions were quite popular in
Germany.
