Microsoft’s new mantra for Lumia devices is shoot for the low-end and hope something sticks, but in-between the launches of cheaper and cheaper Windows Phone we might finally get a flagship.
That’s according to Microsoft’s Juha Kokkonen in a press release, claiming Microsoft will use Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 810 chip in its flagship device, coming later this year.
The Snapdragon 810 is Qualcomm’s current flagship chip set, set to be implemented with 4GB of RAM and Adreno 430 GPU. The chipset offers a lot of advancements on the current crop of processor, including more LTE bands, battery saving and photo enhancements.
Offering all of that on a Lumia device might be overkill, but it might also bring Microsoft back into the premium market, alongside Apple, Samsung and Motorola.
The Lumia device will most likely come running Microsoft’s new Windows 10 operating system for phones, with universal apps and other goodies brought over from the PC platform.
Windows Phone fans have been asking for a new flagship since the Lumia 1020, but have been left with compromises to deal with high price and the all-too-large Lumia 1520.
Hopefully Microsoft will remember to utilize Nokia’s camera division for the next Lumia flagship, considering the 41MP camera on the Lumia 1020 was one of the best features on the device.
Microsoft announced a good quarter for hardware a few weeks ago, leading to increased spending on new hardware. This should come in the form of new Lumia devices and more Surface tablets and accessories.
