How to Enable Google Docs Offline on your Android Device

Are you aware that you can make use of the famous Google Docs on your Android device even if you are not connected to the internet?
Are you also aware that it is possible to make edits on any of your Google Docs while offline and that these changes will reflect in the docs when you are connected to the internet?
Well, if you did not know this, this article has come to your rescue with a short how-to tutorial on the steps you can follow to enable the access to Google Docs while offline.
At the moment, there are numerous Material Design themed Google Docs/Sheets/Slides versions and thanks to these, it is now possible to access these services even if not connected to the internet. In this guide, we are going to make use of Nexus 5 to show you how you can bring offline Google Docs to your Android smartphone. However, the same process applies to enabling offline access of Google Sheets and Google Slides.
How to enable offline access of Google Docs
One thing you must know is that before enabling offline access of Google Docs, it is mandatory that you activate your internet. Post the offline enabling process, you can go ahead and start using this application without an internet connection whatsoever.
  1. First of all start the Google Docs app on your Android smartphone and you should be able to see all your saved documents.
  2. On the right of each title of the saved documents there are three small grey dots
  3. Tap on these grey dots and you should be able to see a small menu for each document popping out.
  4. On the field for “Keep on device”, tap on it and you should be able to see a check mark next to it. If this is so, it means that the document in question here has been cached for offline viewing.
  5. If you go ahead and swipe the navigation drawer open from the side or alternatively tap the hamburger menu located at the upper left side of the Google Docs window, you should be able to see a section labeled as “On Device”. This is where your offline Google Docs are stored.
  6. You can now go ahead and access your Google Docs when offline, without any troubles. To do this, you have two alternatives: one is by using the “On Device” sub menu, while the second involves opening the document in the usual view and if it’s enabled for offline viewing, the document will open up, if not; an error message will show up.
You can also go ahead and make any edits on this document and the changes will be visible the next time you are connected to the internet. This ensures that the internet is no longer a barrier between you and your Google Docs.
