Facebook Working on Virtual Reality Apps

Oculus Rift DK2 review

Almost a year after Facebook acquired virtual reality firm Oculus VR, the social network has been tinkering with its $2 billion investment.

During Tuesday's Code/Media conference in California, Facebook Chief Product Officer Chris Cox said the company has been playing around with VR app creation.

Cox told Re/code senior editor Peter Kafka about an app that lets you pilot a Blue Angel aircraft, and another that takes you to Mongolian yurt.

"The first time you're in [a virtual world], you realize you are looking at the future," Cox said. "You look around, and it's beautiful."

Bringing that to Facebook just makes sense, he said. "What you're doing when you're using Facebook, you're just sending around little bits of experience. You're just sending a photo, you're sending a video, you're sending a piece of text, you're sending an idea, you're sending a thought."

Add virtual reality to the mix, and suddenly you're dealing in a world with a much fuller, more immersive environment to share those same experiences.
Facebook did not immediately respond to a request for comment. But social network users might want to start writing down virtual reality concept ideas, since Cox suggested that users will one day be creating their own VR experiences.

"You'll do it," Cox told Kafka. "Beyoncé will do it."

"Beyoncé's is way more interesting than mine," Kafka joked.

Don't expect to dive into Queen Bey's virtual world any time soon, though. According to the Facebook's product officer, the company's plans for VR are still "a long way away."

The same can be said for a consumer version of the Rift—Crescent Bay—which Oculus CEO Brendan Iribe said in November will not be ready for "many months."

Unveiled in September, the lighter Crescent Bay headset includes new LEDs integrated into the rear for 360-degree tracking, and comes with a higher refresh rate, greater resolution, and, for the first time, built-in headphones.
